Restoring our pasture land back to natural prairie is not only hugely beneficial to native fauna, but it restores balance to the earth and allows this property to grow and thrive how it was intended. When the rescue was built, this was acres and acres of pasture. With a lot of dedication and work, Abi has allowed the parrots to benefit from the herbs and medicinal plants that naturally exist here.

Around the property, we have many different types of plants with all unique purposes. Some are designed to attract a specific type of bee, whereas others may attract every type of insect you could think of. Cataloguing as many types of plants as possible will really afford us an inside look into what we can expect for the coming years. We have found the best method is locating certain plants and monitoring the spread, then choosing locations for purposefully planted companion flora.

In our aviary, we are particular about what we are planting. We have 5 different types of berry bushes, some native and some cultivars. We also have nettle, herbs in the summer, and most recently, native mountain mint. We want to expand there over the next couple years so the flight can really be utilized more and offer natural foraging opportunities when the birds go out for sunshine and baths.

While some we may plant with an intended purpose, we don’t believe every single plant has to have an interest to exist.
